Madame Bovary is Gustave Flaubert's biting criticism of human stupidity and romantic ideals. The widowed Dr. Charles Bovary marries Emma, the daughter of one of his patients. Because of her shallow romantic ideals, Emma grows bored, has affairs, and runs up a huge debt. When collectors come knocking, Madame Bovary can't deal with her reality and poisons herself. Charles, now destitute, dies soon afterward, leaving their daughter a life of poverty.
