In Light in August, William Faulkner explores man's duty to his community and the community's responsibility to man. Lena Grove, searching for her unborn child's father, ends up in the small town of Jefferson on the day that Joanna Burden's home is burned down. Through a series of stories and flashbacks, you learn of the suspicion, hypocrisy, and bigotry that led to Joanna's death at the hands of Joe Christmas, and Joe's subsequent death and mutilation by Percy Grimm.
